Pride and Prejudice is the second novel by English author Jane Austen, published in 1813. A novel of manners, it follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the female protagonist of the book, who learns how to overcome her prejudice and also the character development of Mr Darcy, the male protagonist of the book, who overcomes his pride.

Mr Bennet, owner of the Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire, has five daughters, but his property can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family faces becoming poor by the time he dies. Thus, it is imperative that at least one of the daughters marry well to support the others, which is a primary motivation driving the plot.
